Blood, Sweat, and Taxes

FalseIncarnate’s Compo entry for LD43: “Sacrifices must be made”

In life, sometimes you have to make some sacrifices. Especially when you are a farmer who tends a spiritually active plot of land!

Raise crops and animals, collect natural resources like wood, coal, and metal, craft finished goods, upgrade animal pens and workshops, buy and sell to markets, and pay your taxes before the Taxman closes down your farm.

Oh yea, and make sure you are regularly sacrificing goods to the farm spirits if you want to be successful and gain their favor.

How to play:

Use WASD to move your farmer, and arrow keys to face a direction without moving. E to interact with objects in the world (opens menus). Esc to open the pause menu and close menus. 1-6 to select menu options (options varies across menus).

Grow crops, raise animals, harvest resources, and craft products to sell and sacrifice to the spirits. Spirits will meddle with your farm if they feel ignored too long, stealing animal feed, wrecking their shrines, or influencing your efficiency. Appease the spirits with relevant sacrifices to earn their favor, increasing efficiency and earning bonus harvests.

The spirits aren’t the only greedy and demanding force in your farm though, beware the Taxman! Pay his taxes regularly or he’ll trigger a government seizure of your farm (and end your game!) if you miss his deadline. However, if you can manage to pay off his increasing taxes long enough, you’ll earn a Tax Exempted status and no longer have to pay taxes on your farm (at least for the rest of your current play-through)!

Experience features such as:

  • Crop farming
  • Beekeeping
  • Animal Farming
  • Fishing
  • Mining
  • Crafting
  • Buying and Selling products
  • Sacrificing products to appease the spirits
  • Paying taxes

Additional Notes:

I unfortunately didn’t have enough time to implement a title screen / main menu before the submission deadline. I plan on adding one later with further updating of this project, but that’s obviously outside the confines of the Compo.

I am aware that you are able to walk past the edge of the grass tiles, so please watch your step. I focused on the mechanics of the game and forgot to bound the level properly. My bad.

Please report any notable bugs so I can fix them in future updates. You can post them here in comments, but a Github issue report would be fantastic if you are able!
